It is said that the walls of the old Roman Castle of Branodunum were pulled to pieces for the purpose of erecting a gigantic Malt House like some fungoid growth from the decay of a bit of the old Roman empire.

It was the very largest in England, usually marked distinctly on contemporary maps:  This big building, which was 312 feet long was pulled down in 1878 and the bricks carted away and sold to a Fakenham builder,  though some few local buildings still have Roman bricks in them - St. Mary's Church at Brancaster and outbuildings of local houses.

The quay, as shown in the painting, is still there at Brancaster Staithe and although in some state of disrepair, it is said that present owners, the National Trust, are considering renovation.
