More Wooden Objects appear
on Holme Beach

John Lorimer visited me last week and brought his latest collection of Holme Beach photographs and artefacts for me to see.

It is difficult for him (and for me) to comment on the mysterious wooden objects being uncovered on the beach by each tide.  Norfolk Archaeology say they are monitoring the situation but have, as yet, made no further comment.  Geoff Needham, Holme Parish Council Chairman, is also monitoring and photographing the site.  I am reliably informed that the Wildlife Trust is acting as guide for visitors to the beach as this is the best way to avoid indiscriminate trampling which would disturb the peat beds and upset the feeding winter wildlife.

Below are some of John's latest photographs from the beach which I reproduce with his permission.  Please remember that they are his copyright.

The Logs (43246 bytes)

The latest picture of the two oak logs now showing a wattle fence surrounding them.

The measurements are:
The oak wattle fence is elliptical in shape

and is 12' long and 7'6" across.
The two logs are 5' apart and their length is 4'.
The outer circle of finger post timbers is 22' from the centre of the logs. See also At Holme with Seahenge

On the right is a close up of a section of the oak wattle fence surrounding the logs, seen at the top left of the above picture.

This circle is 100m to the east of 'Seahenge'

This picture of the logs was taken some weeks ago.  It shows how quickly the tides have uncovered the inner circle of wattle.

Another mystery . . .

These posts on the right have been described as an ancient fish trap.  Is this right?

More to come . . . .  ancient walkways?      Stone (9056 bytes)     and curiously marked stones . . . .
