17th July
Ancient Root Removed

Mervyn Lambert, a plant-hire operator who has been keeping a close watch on the removal of the 'Seahenge', effectively halted work on lifting the central oak root when he noticed that the machine being used went against the Health & Safety crane regulations. Using a mobile 'phone, discussions were held with the Health & Safety Executive.

English Heritage agreed to return the next day with a larger machine.

Meantime, the root had been prepared for lifting as can be seen in the photograph.

After receiving permission from the Health & Safety Executive, the root was finally drawn up from its bed of blue clay on Home-Next-The-Sea beach.

It is interesting to note the clean cut base,   presumably achieved with the use of bronze age tools.

Now residing under a continuous spray of sea water, the root awaits further investigation at Flag Fen in Peterborough.

Nothing was found underneath the timbers

English Heritage representatives have admitted that they made a mistake when they chain-sawed off a large piece of the root for carbon dating testing.  [see 1st Report] They  also admitted that the piece (a cake slice shaped piece of 3 feet in depth) will have been destroyed.  They have suggested that a replica piece can be stuck back into the root!

Another meeting was held in Holme Village Hall on the 21st July between English Heritage and the villagers. One of the views put forward was that a replica of the Henge should be built within the environs of the village.

Parish Council Chairman Geoff Needham said that the meeting agreed that the 'Henge' ought to be returned and housed in a purpose-built location.

It has been reported that Television Channel 4 is suggesting a reconstruction of the 'Henge' by its Time Team, somewhere in the village.

(This did, in fact, happen - see Applehenge)
